Austin comedy biography
About Kerry Awn
Kerry Awn is woven into Austin comedy history well before the city's current club boom. After moving to Austin in 1970, he became part of the city's counterculture as a visual artist and a founding member of the Uranium Savages, then developed a stand-up career that crossed music, characters, satire, and local storytelling.
Awn won the first Funniest Person in Austin contest in 1986. His comedy work has included years with Esther's Follies, appearances at the Velveeta Room, and the Ronnie Velveeta character whose name became part of the club's identity.
His profile represents an older Austin tradition in which stand-up, sketch, music, political satire, and visual art shared the same stages. That history is essential context for the much larger scene operating today.
