Mic procedures change more often than ordinary show calendars. Open each listing before you go and confirm the sign-up method, set length, selection process, age policy, and whether the event is comedy-only.

How to arrive prepared
Bring a short set
Many rooms give new performers only a few minutes. Prepare a clear opening, know your closing line, and have a shorter version ready if the host announces a tighter set.
Check sign-up timing
Some lists are first come, some are randomized, and some are curated. Arrive before the published sign-up time and listen to the host's instructions.
Stay for the room
An open mic works because comics also become the audience. Watching other sets teaches you the room, supports the show, and helps you become part of the local circuit.
Respect the venue
Buy something when appropriate, follow age and ID rules, avoid recording without permission, and remember that staff and hosts make recurring stage time possible.

What counts as an open mic?
A comedy open mic is a working room, not a polished headliner show. New performers test first drafts beside experienced comics rebuilding material. The audience may be small, the lineup can change at the last minute, and the most useful laugh of the night may be the one that tells a comic exactly where a joke needs work.
Austin also has showcases with submission spots, booked new-comic nights, improv jams, variety stages, and mixed-discipline mics. We label an event as an open mic when the published listing offers a public or clearly described performer sign-up process.
