About Lashonda Lester
Lashonda Lester became one of the most important voices in Austin stand-up through forceful storytelling, sharp social observation, and a stage presence that made her a mentor as well as a headliner. She moved from Detroit to Austin and developed a body of work that reached well beyond conventional club sets.
Her long-running Weird! True Hollywood Tales combined researched biography, multimedia, celebrity history, and dark comedy. The project showed the range of an artist who could command a short stand-up set and also build an hour around deeply researched narrative material.
Lester won Funniest Person in Austin in 2016 after multiple finals appearances. She died in 2017 while her national career was accelerating; the posthumous album Shondee Superstar preserves sets recorded at the Velveeta Room and remains part of her Austin legacy.
